Some versions of Linux use different colored text to differentiate types of files and directories. It can be really useful but it can also be very annoying, especially if you use your own background colors in different puTTY windows. To turn the colored text off:
unalias ls
You’re welcome!
this works for ls but still has colored text in vi!!

unalias viIn RHEL some of these commands are aliased to include formatting, specifically the colored text. You can always unalias them for your session to get back to the original functionality of the command. There might be others, give this a try if you find any more.
